Getting The Right Tools For Woodworking
by Bruce Silvello

Woodworking is one of the fastest growing hobbies;
it's fun and satisfying to make your own pieces of
furniture. But if you're just starting out, it can be
frustrating not knowing the various pieces of equipment
that you will need to complete your first project. Here's
what you'll need to get started.

First, go to your local hardware store and get some
measuring tools. You will need the basics: a ruler, a tape
measure, and a protractor. These supplies are with
school items, and you can get them all for only a few
dollars. Check a discount store or local retailer.

You may want to get a level, especially if you plan to
make larger or more intricate pieces. A level allows
you to measure straight lines so that your furniture
is aligned correctly.

Now you can measure the wood, but you need to be
able to cut it. You have to get a saw. Ask for help with
this purchase as it is the most expensive one on the list
of things you'll need. Saws have many different features
and range from $30 to several hundred. Start out with a
basic saw and move up as you have more experience.

You may want to start with a circular saw. Most people
recognize these saws. They have a circular blade with a
protective shield. These saws are anchored onto the base
of the saw, which allows you to sit it on wood and run it
across to cut. These typically have an electric motor and
need to plug in.

You also may want to invest in a table saw once you get
started. These saws include many varieties, such as the
benchtop, a contractor, and a cabinet saw. Choose the
saw based on the project you will undergo. While you
may not use all of the features as a beginner, pay
attention to what the saw you purchase can do.

Now that you have the materials to make the furniture,
you should look for finishing materials so that you will
have a beautiful piece when you're done. You will need
the basic assembling tools for your furniture. Anyone
who's done any housework should have many of them
already. You need a hammer, screwdriver, bits, and
clamps. Other supplies, such as chisels and hand
planes, will permit you to put touches of elegance on
your furniture. These supplies are all available at your
local hardware store where you should feel free to ask
for help.

Likewise, finishing tools usually include the various
items which will help you finish and decorate your
various furniture projects. These can include sandpaper -
used with or without hand held electric sanders, steel
wool, files, or scrapers. And, in order to properly finish
your furniture projects, you will need the appropriate
stains and paint.

While it looks as if you need many, many items,
remember that many of them are very inexpensive. The
beginner's tools are less than $2 each. You can find
stains and paints inexpensively as well. Look for deals,
especially on the larger items like the saw. Wait for
sales and other specials, and then get started!
